A community engaged and scientifically robust way to study mammal populations
Snapshot NY is a statewide network of trail cameras powered by community volunteers. By sharing wildlife photos, you contribute to research that helps scientists learn more about New York’s mammals and informs wildlife conservation and management.
A collaborative approach
Snapshot NY is a collaborative effort between Cornell University, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and YOU! By setting up a trail camera on your land and using our app, you can help monitor wildlife across New York.
The data collected by Snapshot NY allows us to monitor trends in abundance and distribution of mammals like black bears, fisher, bobcats and more! This information allows wildlife professionals to better manage and conserve wildlife in the state.
You can help by collecting data in areas of the state that wildlife researchers and managers cannot reach. More than 50% of New York is privately owned land -- land that is more accessible to citizen scientists than it is to researchers!
